Why Are The Tires Of A Car Black?

In an age where the cars we drive are customizable, why does the color of tires remain a standardized black?

The black color isn’t there for cosmetic reasons. The dark color is produced by a substance in the rubber known as carbon-black.

Carbon-black is a chemical compound that is added to the rubber to increase the strength and durability of the tire. This aspect increases road safety as stronger tires ensure a safer drive.

Carbon-black also increases the lifespan of the tire by conducting heat away from parts of the tire that get hot when driving. The chemical also shields the tire from harmful ultraviolet radiation which is known to deteriorate tires.

Although we don’t recognize the importance of carbon-black on a day to day basis, the chemical is truly an unsung hero.
